'Babel' is the Best So Far

It’s rather early, and I’m sure the Toronto Film Festival will offer a few challenges to this, but my favorite film of the year so far is Babel. The third collaboration between director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga is nothing short of brilliant. The trailer for the film (which opens on October 27) is available online, so check it out now. You’ll also likely see it on the big screen, in front of World Trade Center (more on that film later). The Babel trailer makes it appear much more linear and more like a thriller than it really is, but still does justice to the film’s themes of language, family, and crisis. At Cannes this year, many of us pegged it as the one to beat for the Palme d’Or, but instead it just won the “Best Director” prize. Will it have better odds come Oscar time? Like I said, it’s early still, but don’t count it out.
