With Labor Day a-comin’, this marked the unofficial “Final Weekend of Summer.”
Back in May, with nothing but tent poles and dreams up ahead, I started playing a game called Blockbuster Bingo. The rules are simple:
Every Friday, I’d go see the film I thought would open #1, irrespective of quality.
If I thought a film would hold #1 for a second, (or third…or fourth) week, I could take the day off–or see something I wanted to see. To hedge my bets, I could take a shot one of these weeks on a dark horse dog, but this losing strategy would have landed me in trouble on more than one occasion.
There were only two weeks this summer when I missed outright–the first, the weekend of 6/23, when I couldn’t bring myself to pay to see CLICK. The other, on 7/28 when I mistakenly under estimated MIAMI VICE‘s ability to open, holding pat with week four of the juggernaut PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST.
Here’s how the season played out:
(W) = win: picked right and paid to see the weekend’s top grossing film, and/or where I held pat.
(L) = loss: picked wrong, or failed to pay to see the top grossing film.
Week 1: May 5 M:I:iii: $47,743,273 (W)
Week 2: May 12 M:I:iii: held pat, $25,008,971 (W)
Week 3: May 19 DA VINCI CODE: $77,073,388 (W)
Week 4: May 26 X-MEN:THE LAST STAND : $122,861,157 (W)
Week 5: June 2 THE BREAK-UP: $39,172,755 (W)
Week 6: June 9 CARS: $60,119,509 (W)
Week 7: June 16 CARS: held pat, $33,731,634 (W)
Week 8: June 23 CLICK: $40,011,236 (L)
(It was here that I realized CARS would not live up to my great expectations)
Week 9: June 30 SUPERMAN RETURNS: $52,535,096 (W)
Week 10: July 7 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST: $135,634,554 (W)
Week 11: July 14 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST: held pat, $62,345,264 (W)
Week 12: July 21 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST: held pat, $35,215,201 (W)
Week 13: July 28 MIAMI VICE: $25,723,815 (L)
Week 14: August 4 TALLADEGA NIGHTS: $47,042,215 (W)
Week 15: August 11 TALLADEGA NIGHTS: held pat, $22,126,226 (W)
Week 16: Augtust 18 SNAKES ON A PLANE : $15,206,301 (W)
Week 17: August 24 INVINCIBLE: appx. $17,000,000 (W)
If this were an NFL season, I’d have gone 14-2, with a pre-season win.
(…and I’d be in Tampa Bay, may-tee!)
