Taxi Drivers Stage Benefit To Battle Gas Prices

One of my favorite bloggers, Melissa Plaut (New York Hack) is participating in an event this Saturday, August 19th to “help cabbies earn a living wage in the face of the worldwide gas crisis.” She will be reading from her upcoming book about what it is like being a twenty something female taxi driver in the Big Apple. Her blog is quite a great read, and very insightful as to what it is like driving a yellow cab. Some excerpts below:

“Once the big awards show was over, a very drunk gay cowboy flagged me down. I’m not kidding. He was wearing a cowboy hat, a fringed suede jacket, and cowboy boots. He was so wasted, probably from trying to drink away the pain of losing to “Crash,” that he could barely tell me where to go.”

This drunk fuck really pissed me off. He and his friend hailed me in Williamsburg on Bedford Ave and wanted to go to Grand and Graham. I started driving but then stopped when I realized this guy was still smoking a cigarette. I myself am a smoker, but I don’t like people to smoke in my cab because the smell lingers and non-smoking passengers get mad when they get in after. Plus, it’s illegal and I can get a huge ticket for allowing it. So I said, “Hey, are you smoking? Can you throw it out?

I sort of snapped at him because he almost sat on my jacket before I had a chance to move it out of the way. He saw my mood and said, “Are you having a bad night?” I replied, “Sort of. I just didn’t want your butt on my jacket.” Luckily these people were all in good spirits, so they said, “Don’t worry. We’re gonna tip you really well. In fact, we’re gonna make your night.” When we got to the club, the fare was $5. The guy sitting next to me handed me $50 and told me to keep it! Then he goes, “See? I told you we were gonna make your night!” I thanked him and he said, jokingly, “Now can I sit on your jacket?”

He was right, they pretty much did make my night.”
