The trades report today that The Weinstein Company has acquired theatrical rights to the Dixie Chicks documentary, Shut Up and Sing, directed by Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Here’s the story, from Ian Mohr at Variety:
The Weinstein Co. has preemptively acquired worldwide rights to the docu “Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing,” directed by “Harlan County USA” helmer Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck. Pic will world preem as a gala presentation next month in Toronto.
Weinstein Co., Sony Pictures Classics and other select specialty units had peeks at the film prior to its Toronto unveiling. Doc follows the female country music trio over three years while the band was under fire for publicly criticizing George Bush in 2003. Kopple and Peck produced via the Cabin Creek Films shingle, and pic was sold off through CAA and Dixie music manager Simon Renshaw.
“The Dixie Chicks paid a huge price for questioning the invasion of Iraq and daring to say what millions of people were thinking,” Peck said. “Our film looks at the cost of standing up for what you believe in.”
Pic is the first U.S. docu ever to nab a gala slot at Toronto and only the second in 14 years to land a gala berth.
