I spent some of this weekend building my screening schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival, and that’s when I discovered Bella, a feature premiering in the Contemporary World Cinema section. And, I had no idea this new American indie would have a connection to the University of Texas at Austin, or its film school. Turns out the writer/directior, Alejandro Monteverde, is a fairly recent graduate of UT’s RTF program (where I also got my bachelor’s). I was familiar with his work, especially his acclaimed short film Waiting For Trains, but didn’t realize he had completed a feature and sure didn’t realize it was premiering at Toronto. Just further proof of Toronto’s expansive line-up, as well as the very many success stories that have some kind of connection to Austin’s film community.
