“Massaker” Pulled from Area Theaters

"Massaker" Pulled from Area Theaters

This week, moviegoers in Augusta, Georgia, Tuscon, Arizona, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Memphis, Tennessee won’t be seeing the latest film in indieWIRE and Emerging Pictures’s “Undiscovered Gems” film series. The movie is called “Massaker,” and directed by Monika Borgman, Lokman Slim and Hermann Theissen, the French-German-Lebanese documentary recounts the mass murders that took place in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in Beirut in 1982. Winner of the FIPRESCI critics’ prize at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival, the movie may have proved too controversial for even these select art-house venues. I’d urge citizens who live in these areas to check in with the Imperial Theater, the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the Loft Cinema and find out why they’re not showing “Massaker” as part of their Undiscovered Gems series. Could the move be politically motivated?
