To mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Germany’s most successful post-war director, Ranier Werner Fassbinder, the Berlinale, taking place February 8-18, will host a restored for cinema gala of “Berlin Alexanderplatz,” which the festival describes as “one of the finest of his artistic accomplishments: the tragic story of Franz Biberkopf, based on an Alfred Doblin novel.” The premiere–screening in two parts on February 9–will be attended by the stars Gunter Lamprecht, Hanna Schygulla, Barbara Sukowa, Gottfried John and also Doblin’s grandson, Stefan Doblin.
