The exhibit, “Robert De Niro in Costume: Selections From the Archive,” will be landing in Austin for a March 19 to April 1 stay at the Harry Ransom Center on the University of Texas campus. It will include costumes from 13 roles, including garb featured in Backdraft (a firefighter suit!), Awakenings (hospital clothes?), and Meet the Fockers (a fake breast!), among others. Presumably, the exhibit will also include the boxing trunks from Raging Bull (hopefully they’ve been laundered!).
Running up to the exhibit (minus a week off during SXSW), the Ransom Center will also screen a selection of De Niro titles, including Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, as well as rarely seen early films like Brian DePalma’s Greetings and Roger Corman’s Bloody Mama. The prop/outfits I wish were in this collection are the towel/silencer that catches fire in The Godfather Part II, the baseball bat from The Untouchables, that crazy shirt from Cape Fear, the mirror from Taxi Driver (think about it), and the blackmail used to get him to participate in The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle.
