As I do everytime I can’t remember the title of a film… or the name of an actor … or some other movie related tidbit…which is to say, about five hundred times a day, I logged onto the Internet Movie DataBase for a quick fix.
When I arrived, something was amiss. At first I thought my browser settings were whack–the site looked weird. I browsed around, and no change.
Turns out, the folks at IMDB have broken the centuries old dictum: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” They’ve reconfigured the page layouts: “The goal of the name and title page redesign was to find ways to surface as much data as possible, with user observations informing and guiding the actual redesign.”
“We’ve just launched our newly designed name and title pages, bringing a fresh look to your favorite movies and stars, with a new layout that makes everything easier to find. If you take a look at our page for Little Miss Sunshine you’ll see links to trailers, message boards, and more at the top, a “Quicklinks” dropdown on the left side so you can navigate directly to the info you want, and easy-to-read cast lists and movie details as you scroll down. On the page for Jennifer Hudson you’ll find a photo gallery for the lovely Oscar nominee, as well as another “Quicklinks” navigation box to the left. Got questions, comments, or suggestions? Check out our Redesign FAQ for all the answers.
If, like me, you are less than enthusiastic about the new design, there is an option on the FAQ page to revert to the old design.
However, they warn, that “this will be a temporary option while we gather your feedback and resolve any outstanding bugs.”
