If you, like me, are mystified by the possibility that Little Miss Sunshine could win the Best Picture Oscar this year, take comfort in one fact: this would only increase the likelihood for Martin Scorsese to win his very first, and long-overdue, Academy Award. Sunshine directors, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, did not get a nomination and the Academy has had no issue in recent years with splitting the decision between which films get Best Picture and which is awarded Best Director. So, Sunshine‘s triumph will be shared by Scorsese. Unless, of course, Babel (which is the best of the three, in my opinion) walked in with the upset for either – or both – categories. That would seem possible, if Scorsese hadn’t already won the DGA award this weekend. So, regardless if the Best Picture winner is Sunshine or Babel, Scorsese should still walk away with an Oscar come February 25.
