The 2007 Independent Spirit Awards

The 2007 Independent Spirit Awards

Spirit Awards day, is a long and exhausting experience, but certainly enjoyable. For one afternoon, you have a huge slice of the American independent film community sitting under one roof. The complete recap of award-winners can be found on indieWIRE, but it was certainly a wonderful day for Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson.

I was very lucky to attend this year, sitting at the Old Joy table, courtesy of the gracious invitation of producer Lars Knudsen. It was sad when Old Joy didn’t win for its nomination, but the whole team was pretty quick to recover and make the most of the day. Also at our table was Mat Whitecross, the English co-director of “Best Documentary” winner, The Road to Guantanamo. Coincidentally, I went into the awards with a personal tie to all of the other Best Doc nominees, but none for Guantanamo. So, it was a cool treat to have Mat at our table to change that.

Anyhow, without further ado, here are some random pics from throughout the day:

(Inside the awards ceremony, while Lily Tomlin and Robert Downey, Jr. take part in a special tribute to Robert Altman.)

(Actors Aaron Eckhart and Sean Penn hang out in the secret weapon of the Spirit Awards: the parking lot. This is where attendees take refuge for a quick leg-stretch or cocktail or cigarette break. Eckhart is at the ceremony for his “Best Actor” nod in ‘Thank You For Smoking,’ but he lost to the amazing Ryan Gosling for his role in ‘Half Nelson.’ Penn is in the house, supporting his wife Robin Wright Penn and her nomination for “Best Actress” in ‘Sorry, Haters.’ She lost to Shareeka Epps for her equally amazing role in ‘Half Nelson.’)

(Also hanging outside the ceremony are Jeff Abramson from Gen Art, Susan Buice nominated from ‘Four Eyed Monsters,’ Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen from the nominated ‘Old Joy’ and ‘Wild Tigers I Have Known,’ and Arin Crumley a double-nominee from ‘Four Eyed Monsters.’)

(The Austin boys from nominated feature ‘Chalk,’ enjoy themselves inside the tent.)

(And, when it’s all said and done, if you’ve ever wondered what those tables at award shows look like, I give you Table 265.)
