"Wordplay" Team Tackling U.S. Debt in New Doc

Wordplay” creators Patrick Creadon and Christine O’Malley have set their sights on a new documentary subject, namely the United States federal debt. Through their O’Malley Creadon Productions, the filmmakers are set to begin a new movie on the subject, produced by Open Sky Entertainment. In the words of an announcement, “the new documentary will examine the ever-expanding U.S. federal debt and its implications for the nation’s future.” It will be loosely based on the writings of Bill Bonner, Addison Wiggin, and Kate Incontrera, who are editors of the financial newsletter The Daily Reckoning. Creadon will write and direct the documentary, with O’Malley on board as co-writer and producer. Among the executive producers are Addison Wiggin of Agora Financial, LLC and Jon Carnes from the One Horizon Foundation. Producers include Glenn Garland and Christopher Duddy, along with Sarah Gibson, who produced last year’s “Small Town Gay Bar.” Eyeing a 2008 release for the movie, the filmmakers are pulling together a non-partisan group of advisors, including government and business leaders, according to the announcement. “This film presents challenges similar to the ones we met when we made ‘Wordplay’,” said O’Malley, in a statement. “Our hope is that we can again take a potentially dry story and make it cinematic, revealing, and entertaining.” While Creadon added in a statement, “America’s federal debt is $8.6 trillion dollars and growing at a frightening pace. In addition, our major entitlement programs (Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid) are dangerously unfunded. As a country, we are slowly spending ourselves to death.” [Eugene Hernandez]
