Cannes' Asian Tidal Wave?

On the day I bought the bullet and paid up for a pricey roundtrip ticket to the 60th Cannes Film Festival, Screen Daily’s Mike Goodrich offers some justfication for my outlay: a rumored selection of Asian cinema that promises to be the strongest in years. According to Screen, early word points to new works from Chinese directors Jiang Wen (“Devils on the Doorstep”) and Wang Xiaoshuai (“Beijing Bicycle”), Koreans Lee Chang-dong (“Oasis”), Kim Ki-duk, and the 100th feature from Im Kwon-taek, and the latest from Japan’s Takeshi Kitano, along with Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s first French-language film “Le Ballon Rouge” and Wong Kar-wai’s first English-language effort “My Blueberry Nights.”

Other Asian possibilities, according to Screen, include the crime triptych “Triangle” directed by Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To, To’s latest stand-alone feature “The Sparrow,” Stephen Chow’s science-fiction comedy “A Hope,” Alexi Tan’s directorial debut “Blood Brothers” and Thai filmmaker Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s “Ploy.”

Cannes announces its official selection on April 19.
