Romanian New Wave: Can It Be Sustained?

Everyone loves a new wave. And the resurgence of Romanian Cinema on the international film scene has been welcomed by critics and film festivals the world over. But as I discovered writing this story for indieWIRE, Romania’s own cultural institutions have yet to adequately catch onto and support the exciting 30-something filmmakers that have been bubbling under their nose for the last few years. Even Cristian Mungiu’s recent Cannes victory, Romanian insiders tell me, didn’t budge the country’s old-fashioned National Cinema Centre bureucracy from accepting the new. If Romania’s “New Wave” — and many dispute the label — is to thrive, it may do so only in the rarefied environments of world film festivals, and like Iranian’s new wave filmmakers, be mostly ignored at home.
