Avril Fool’s Day

Avril Fool's Day

So, remember that moment in the Vanilla Ice Behind the Music, when they dig up a clip of Rob Van Winkle defending the originality of his one hit, “Ice Ice Baby?” This, after he comes under fire (which was later settled out of court) for lifting the bassline straight off of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure.” You kind of have to think Avril Lavigne is going through similar bouts of denial when she claims that her new song, “Girlfriend” is not a complete rip-off of the 1979 song from The Rubinoos, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.”

Wanna decide for yourself? The kind and diligent folks at TMZ have offered up a clip-by-clip comparison. Here’s Avril’s “Girlfriend” and here is The Rubinoos’ “Boyfriend.” What do you think? Oh, and just for nostalgia’s sake, here’s a cover of the Rubinoos song, by ultra-underrated and now-defunct shoegazers Lush.
