This blog has been a lower priority as I contend with the turmoil of newborn care. But over these last sleepless, mind-ravaging days (everyone’s okay now, not to worry), I’ve managed to pound out a few articles amidst the pounding caffeinated cloud of my brain.
In indieWIRE today, Popular French Film Finds U.S. Audiences offers a detailed look at how a number of mainstream French films (“La vie en rose,” “Paris je t’aime,” “The Valet”) have cranked out ticket-sales in the multi-millions over the last couple months. And while good for the French industry, this trend may actually be hurting an intelligent art-house French movie such as “Lady Chatterley.” We’ve seen this trend before in English-language independent cinema — bigger-budget, star-driven, but still “indie” film pushing out more cutting-edge movies of a similar ilk.
At Tomorrow Unlimited, check out MK12’s “History of America.” These guys are awesome. A Kansas-based design collective, MK12 just completed their painterly 30-minute short, which envisions an epic battle between astronauts and cowboys in the heart of Sin City. The trailer alone offers some eye-opening animated delights. Watch out for it at film festivals this fall.
