Who Killed “A Mighty Heart”?

Who Killed "A Mighty Heart"?

Over at The Huffington Post, my recent post, “Who Killed A Mighty Heart?” has stirred a hearty debate around the problems of celebrity culture (did all the tabloid fodder around Angelina Jolie kill the theatrical release?) and whether American audiences are simply too apathetic or cowardly to confront a serious contemporary topic on screen (said one commenter, “Family, friends, and myself have not seen this movie because it’s too soon, too fresh, too hurtful.”) If that’s the case, you wonder what’s going to happen to all those Hollywood Iraq war films readying for release such as Kimberly Peirce’s comeback movie “Stop-Loss,” Paul Haggis’s “In the Valley of Elah,” and Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs.” If audiences don’t see movies about important political and social issues, I doubt filmmakers (and financiers) would keep making them. I guess next time they just won’t cast Angelina Jolie; then again, come Oscar time, I have to admit, she may be able to turn around and bite all her haters in the ass.
