When I glanced at the Daddy Day Camp poster at a theater the other day, I stopped and thought, “Wait a minute, is that for real?” This wasn’t my reaction to the very existence of a sequel to Daddy Day Care nor the fact that the original’s star, Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy, has been replaced in the lead role by Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Though wouldn’t it be kinda funny to have Murphy back, given his pending paternity suit with Scary Spice?) What struck me was the name of the film’s director: Fred Savage. I thought it must be some new “Alan Smithee” type pseudonym and not the Fred Savage. Nope, not at all. Daddy Day Camp is the feature directorial debut of former child star Fred Savage, a.k.a. Kevin Arnold on the TV show, The Wonder Years. First Paul becomes Marilyn Manson, and now this… They grow up so fast.
