At SXSW 2007, we had the great pleasure of hosting the U.S. Premiere of Johnnie To’s latest (for Americans, at least) gangland epic, Exiled. I’m a fan of Asian gangster films, but feel (like J-horror or father-son identity-switch comedies) it’s run its course until someone comes in to redefine it. This is why Exiled is such a must-see. Johnnie To doesn’t redefine the Asian gangster genre, but he modifies and adapts it to blow in some fresh air. Exiled is just as much an homage and tribute to the classic Western, as it is another shoot ’em up. Johnnie To implements conventions and iconography from the great Ford/Leone/Peckinpah era, to create an Asian gangster film that I promise you is unlike any other you’ve seen released in this part of the world. Magnolia will bring this film to theaters, on August 31, and you can now watch the U.S. trailer.
