In a five-day L.A. vacation full of great moments, perhaps the best “Hollywood moment,” came at the very end. I was checking out at the front desk of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel while Jarren sat on a lobby sofa, reading the new Harry Potter book. From behind me, I heard an Irish brogue proclaim to someone “We’re playing the El Rey tomorrow night.” I turned around and it was Glen Hansard of Irish folk/rock band The Frames, also known as the male lead in recent cinema hit Once. Following closely behind him was Marketa Irglova, his female co-star in the film. Both European residents, “what are they doing here?” I wondered. Jarren and I are big fans of Once as well as its soundtrack. I wanted to tip her off to this wonderful coincidence but do so politely and quietly.
There was really no way to do that. No matter, the duo continued walking behind me and over towards the other side of the room. The side with the sofas. The side where Jarren sat, reading her book. Even better, Hansard stopped in front of Jarren who tilted her head up from her book as he asked “Am I supposed to be meeting with you?” Unsure how to answer that, she said “No” and smiled. He apologized, and they walked away and out of the lobby. Bummed we wouldn’t be able to catch the El Rey show, whether it was for them or The Frames (I love The Frames), we had no idea what the two of them were doing in Hollywood three months after the release of their film. It looks like this is what they were up to, according to Jeffrey Wells.
