At the IMAGE Awards Gala in Atlanta this April, Ossie Davis Award honorees John Sayles and Maggie Renzi made a point of meeting with former IMAGE board member, and fellow honoree Will Packer.

On that memorable evening, before Charles S. Dutton presented Sayles and Renzi with the award, we were treated to an extended clip from the prolific teams’ work-in-progress Honeydripper–a period piece about the blues set in 1950’s rural Alabama in a juke joint.

As indie distributor Emerging Pictures prepares for a January 2008 release from, the Honeydripper team is developing a wide-ranging plan to reach new audiences including:
* a John Sayles blog;
* formation of the Honeydripper All-Star band–with tour dates underway–and a performance to be expected in Toronto in conjunction with the film’s World Premiere;
* a video jukebox featuring “old school blues music in the style of what might have been played at the honeydripper lounge”;
* a plan to team with Will Packer, Clark Atlanta and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) to market the indie film, the harvest of Sayles and Packer’s April meeting.

“Stomp the Yard” producer Will Packer and Emerging Pictures founder Ira Deutchman are teaming with Clark Atlanta University to launch a film marketing and distribution course for African-American college students across the country.
The class will be based around the marketing plan for John Sayles’ upcoming musical drama “Honeydripper” starring Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Stacy Keach, Mary Steenburgen and Sean Patrick Thomas. Lectures will be organized by Clark Atlanta marketing professor Charles W. Richardson Jr., led by industry professionals, (including Rainforest Films’ Packer) and distributed on the Internet.”
