'King of Kong' @ the Alamo Drafthouse

(A photo I took of Steve Wiebe, the protagonist of Seth Gordon’s new documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Wiebe returned to Austin after the film’s popular SXSW screening in March, to present the Sunday night screenings of the doc at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.)

King of Kong documentary subject Steve Wiebe was scheduled to make an appearance on Sunday night, at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. Things changed rapidly, when it was announced that arcade referee Walter Day was to join him so that he could officiate Wiebe’s attempt to regain his title as “world champion” of Donkey Kong. Then, things got even more complicated Sunday night, when two members of Wiebe nemesis Billy Mitchell’s crew arrived off a plane to observe the action at the theater. When Jarren and I finally departed the Alamo at 10 p.m., Wiebe was commencing his try to regain the world title… Billy Mitchell’s “entourage” was in attendance… and something interesting was likely to occur by Monday morning. I have to get ready for a flight, so more as this develops…

UPDATE FROM NYC: Reportedly, Steve did not beat the world record to regain his title last night at the Alamo Drafthouse. Though, multiple sources indicate that there were rumblings abound of a possible in-person, one-on-one showdown between Wiebe and Mitchell at some point in the near future. Who knows.
