Soul singer Bettye LaVette is one of the biggest underdog stories of the last few years in pop music. Her career was abruptly put on hold when her record label shelved her 1972 album, Child of the Seventies. She was rarely heard from since then, until 2005 when she teamed with Joe Henry to unleash her highly acclaimed comeback album, I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise. Today, she’s coming back (again) with this lead single from her forthcoming release, The Scene of the Crime, due on September 25. Her backing band for this song, and reportedly much of the album, is genre-defying Southern rockers, Drive-By Truckers. Southern fried soul with a sprinkle of Americana roots rock. That sums up “You Don’t Know Me At All” pretty well. Thanks to Stereogum for sharing this.
