So I hear today that the next remake on the horizon is Martin Campbell re-doing Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Birds for Universal. Naomi Watts will star. They are spinning it as a “reimagining” of the book by Daphne du Maurier which inspired the ’63 Hitchcock… And I guess that may or may not prove a good idea, if Campbell manages to really distance himself from one of Hitchcock’s most recognizable and more mainstream efforts (even as a child I can vividly remember Tippi Hendren’s terrified face on the TV). But Martin Campbell has a really iffy track record (Casino Royale yes, Beyond Borders no), and I question whether this is really the man to take on the ‘Cock. Other than Gus Van Sant‘s Psycho, has anyone else even tried? I mean, theres loose adapations like A Perfect Murder (which did give us good Viggo, but otherwise…) and made for TV examples like Rear Window with Christopher Reeve, but I’d say if there’s anyone to leave alone remake-wise, its him (which Van Sant, even though his Psycho was an interesting cinematic experiment, can probably attest to).
