'Sweeney Todd.' Is Burton Back on Track?

For those of us who grew up watching Tim Burton’s sick and twisted and funny and colorful worlds, we’ve awaited a return to form. Big Fish, The Corpse Bride, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were good, but not great. Planet of the Apes and Sleepy Hollow? Kinda disappointing. I like Mars Attacks! and Ed Wood, but I could be in the minority. For those of us who had our formative minds blown by the winning streak that was Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, it looks like his adaptation of Sweeney Todd may be the Burton we grew up loving and admiring. When I first heard he was doing yet another adaptation for his latest film, I felt he’d decided to just suspend his career to remaking or reworking other people’s projects. But with the trailer for Sweeney Todd online now, he may be up to his old tricks again. Hopefully.
