Writing/Watching Film in Austin This Weekend

This weekend marked the 14th annual Austin Film Festival & Screenwriters Conference. Aspiring screenwriters from around the country came to town for panels, workshops, a screenplay competition, film screenings, and parties. Here are a few pictures I snapped from the first couple of days:

(At the Opening Night Party, held at Buffalo Billiards, Jarren spent some quality time chatting with Larry Wilmore, a writer/actor for The Daily Show and The Office.)

(Festival staffer Fernie Martinez, kicking back at Buffalo Billiards, recently moved to Austin. Prior to Austin, he was wowing festival staffs at Cinevegas.)

(Blood Car writer/director Alex Orr brings his horror comedy to Austin after successful stops at regional fests throughout the nation.)

(Christen McArdle, from the “controversial” Ann Arbor Film Festival, came to town in order to chat with local Austin film folks about the state of her event. The festival has made news recently, because it lost state funding after their programming was questioned.)

(Also hanging out at the Opening Night Party, are Austin-based filmmakers PJ Raval, left, and Alex Smith.)

(On Saturday night at the Screenwriters Conference Wrap Party, guests mingled inside Austin’s McCormick & Schmick’s location downtown. Among the guests, here’s AtomFilms acquisitions VP Megan O’Neill, right, and her husband Harry. Megan was on the shorts jury.)

(Also at the party Saturday night: Houston-based filmmaker Greg Carter, left, and AFI Dallas programmer James Faust, right, flank Alfred Cervantes from the Houston Film Commission.)
