iW NEWS | "Persepolis" and "Brick Lane" Among Top London Fest Winners

The 51st Times BFI London Film Festival came to a close Thursday night with Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud‘s “Persepolis” taking the event’s Sutherland Trophy, while Joanna Hogg was awarded the 10th FIPRESCI International Critics Award for “Unrelated.” Also taking home honors were Sarah Gavron‘s “Brick Lane,” which received London’s Alfred Dunhill Award as well as Cristian Nemescu‘s “California Dreamin,'” taking the 12th Satyajit Ray Award. Other awards include the TCM Short Film Award which went to “A Bout de Truffe,” directed by Tom Tagholm, while The Times BFI London Film Festival Grierson Award was presented to director Andrey Paounov for “The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories.” The festival closed with Wes Anderson‘s “The Darjeeling Limited,” capping a 16-day event which screened 185 features and 133 shorts from 43 countries. “It has been extremely heartening to see such an enthusiastic response to the festival from the public, the media and the industry at large,” commented festival director Sandra Hebron in a statement. “A strong and diverse programme of films, a wealth of inspirational filmmakers, record levels of public attendance and the success of our industry and educational events has made this a hugely enjoyable and successfulfestival.” [Brian Brooks]
