iW NEWS | WGA Announces Strike; Walk Out Set for Monday

This afternoon in Los Angeles, the Writers Guild of America announced a strike against the studios and networks that comprise the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The industry trades — Variety and Hollywood Reporter — indicated that the strike will begin on Monday. The announcement came on the heels of last night’s standing-room-only meeting of 3,000 members of the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), in which the Guild negotiating committee recommended the walk out. At last night’s WGA meeting, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Guild’s negotiating committee indicated that the AMPTP had halted talks, asking that an extension of today’s ‘DVD formula’ be extended to New Media, according to a WGA statement. The Guild also charged that the film studio and TV networks have not responded seriously to their proposals. In their own statement, the AMPTP criticized the WGA’s negotiations, saying, “We are ready to meet and are prepared to close this contract this weekend.” [Eugene Hernandez]
