iW NEWS | Weekend Estimates: Five Films Expand With "Juno" Leading

According to indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) estimates from Rentrak, Jason Reitman‘s “Juno” led five major expansions this weekend, averaging $11,874 on 304 screens, bringing its total to $6.38 million after 3 weeks for Fox Searchlight. Joe Wright‘s’ “Atonement” expanded to a similar 294 screens for Focus Features, taking in $1.97 million for a decent $6,648 average. Both films expand again on Christmas Day. After many weeks on just a few screens, Julian Schnabel‘s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and Tamara Jenkins‘ “The Savages” finally expanded this weekend. “Diving Bell” averaged $4,036 on 28 screens, while “The Savages” took in a $3,841 average from 60 screens. While Marc Forster‘s “The Kite Runner” was the weakest of the expansions, with the Paramount Classics film taking $1.16 million on 377 screens for a mild $3,093 average.
Among the few limited openers this week, First Look‘s release of Jessica Simpson starrer “Blonde Ambition” on 8 screens in Texas perhaps has the distinction of the worst per-theatre-average of 2007, taking in just $1,302 for a truly pathetic average of $163. indieWIRE publishes its weekly box office column on Mondays and final weekend numbers for specialty and limited release films on Tuesdays.
