iW NEWS | Weekend Estimates: "Savages," "Diving Bell" Open Big

According to estimates provided by Rentrak, Tamara Jenkins‘ “The Savages” is well on its way to topping this weekend’s iWBOT with a fantastic per location average of $38,280. Opening on 4 screens, “Savages” looks to top the still-admirable debut of Julian Schnabel‘s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” which averaged $25,100 on 3 screens. Regarding holdovers, Todd Haynes‘ “I’m Not There” only lost about a third of its audience, despite expanding by only 8 screens to 138 and this past weekend’s tendency to suffer a post-Thanksgiving slump. “There” took in $489,000 for a decent $3,543 average. “Starting Out In The Evening” continued to impress in its second weekend. On 8 screens, the Frank Langella starrer averaged $7,162, beating the third weekend average of “Margot at the Wedding,” which stayed at 35 screens for a $5,714 average. [Peter Knegt]
