iW NEWS | Weekend Estimates: Strong "Juno" and "Diving Bell" Holdovers Overshadow "Kite Runner"

According to indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) estimates from Rentrak, Marc Forster‘s “The Kite Runner” took in $451,000 for a $12,886 average on 35 screens. The Paramount Vantage release’s numbers, though certainly respectable, fell under a trio of strong holdovers, most notably Jason Reitman‘s “Juno. “Juno” took in a massive $1.44 million on just 40 screens, averaging an astounding $36,018 in its second weekend for Fox Searchlight. In its third weekend, Julian Schnabel‘s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” also held on strong, with its a $19,993 average from 3 locations, nearly the same numbers as last weekend. The Miramax release finally expands to more theatres this Friday. Joe Wright‘s “Atonement” expanded to 117 locations this weekend and took in an impressive $1.85 million for a $15,835 average. “Runner” was the top new release, though, easily topping Francis Ford Coppola‘s first film in a decade, “Youth Without Youth,” which averaged just $4,636 from six locations for Sony Pictures Classics, while ThinkFilm’s “Nanking” took in $7,150 from one screen . indieWIRE publishes its weekly box office column on Mondays and final weekend numbers for specialty and limited release films on Tuesdays.
