Lee Chang-dong’s brilliant Secret Sunshine is the landslide winner of indieWIRE’s poll for the “Best Undistributed Film.” The nuanced and heartbreaking Korean film, anchored with an astonishing performance by actress Jeon Do-yeon, truly deserves the honor. I’m shocked that, since the film’s premiere at Cannes in May, it has not found an American distributor. This isn’t a “difficult” film like, say, Frownland (which also appears on the list). This is a relatively mainstream drama depicting a troubled mother/wife in the midst of battling her inner demons. I love the film, and hopefully this extra attention will help it find its way to U.S. theaters eventually.
