The Independent Returns, and Still Needs Your Support

The Independent Returns, and Still Needs Your Support

For a few weeks now, I’ve been wanting to blog about the re-launch of The Independent, the long-standing truly indie magazine once housed at the AIVF, long a staple of the DIY filmmaker and a training ground for indie film writers like me. Dare I say indieWIRE might not exist if it weren’t for the good folks at AIVF and The Independent in those early years. After AIVF collapsed in 2006, done in by the age of new media and what many argued was poor management, The Independent recently re-emerged as, fittingly, an online entity: Independent-magazine.org.

With reportedly over 10,000 member/subscribers, hundreds of articles dating back a decade, and new how-to series on everything from selling your short films to obscure TV networks and your doc to public television, the new Independent has kept true to the old magazine’s diehard indie spirit.

But like the old Independent, the new Independent faces the harsh realities of continuing to exist in a non-Indiewood space, without the Gotham Awards-like glitz and major fundraising paydays that come along with it.

“Today, we ask for your help,” said an email I recently received. “As a start-up nonprofit, we rely on our readers to support our efforts. We have great plans for The Independent — including reviving the resource books, re-launching a regular print schedule, and adding the full archives dating back to 1978 to the website. But as efficient as we are, we need financial support to make this happen.”

If you want to put your faith (and money) into keeping the spirit alive, you can donate cash in two of the following ways:

Donate Online: https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=10065 (select “Independent Media Publications”)

Donate by Check: Mail a check to Center for Independent Documentaries, 680 Main Street Sharon, MA 02067. Please put “Independent Media Publications” in the memo.

And good luck to The Independent once again. I fear that they’ll need it.
