Wholphin! Eggers! Yes!

I love Wholphin. It’s one of the best quarterly DVDs you can find, and if you haven’t found it, you should. In fact, I think a subscription would make a great holiday gift (I was not asked to write that, nor do I get a cut of the proceeds). It’s a great source for cutting edge shorts filmmaking and tons of special treats. For a primer, check out this Wholphin profile piece Kim Adelman wrote a few weeks ago for indieWIRE. What I didn’t realize until just now, though, is that Wholphin also hosts a plethora of classic shorts on their Web site. These are terrific shorts that you can download and view for free, right now. Be sure to check it out, and get familiar. Wholphin is the official DVD of the McSweeney’s publishing empire, which was founded by author Dave Eggers. Which reminds me, if you haven’t picked up Eggers’ latest book, What Is the What, you really should. It has nothing to do with short filmmaking, but everything to do with amazing storytelling. Add it to the holiday gift list.
