On Friday, we sent out about 1200 e-mail notifications to filmmakers, passing on their films, which were submitted to SXSW 2008. Some may call these “rejection” letters but we call them “no” letters. To those of you who check this blog from time to time and received a “no” letter, I’m truly sorry. If you were tempted to send hate mail to us as a reply, don’t worry: some of your fellow filmmakers have already taken care of that. Those 1200 e-mails make up about 1/3 of the total films submitted to SXSW 2008. So, that’s a lot of annoyed and angry filmmakers (with more to come in the next month or so), and we definitely don’t want anyone to take it too hard. It makes sense if you want to curse us right now, but please don’t take it personally.
One example to leave you with: there’s an American filmmaker out there who has submitted his third feature to us. We passed on his first two, but he kept submitting. And, this year, we have invited his third feature for SXSW 2008. And let me tell you one of the first things I said to him upon inviting the new film, “Hopefully you don’t hold a grudge for our past decisions.”
