Post-The Wire, I had a giant hole in my TV-on-laptop viewing, and I needed to fill it with whatever I could. I sadly always need one TV show that I’m currently watching or I don’t feel right. I need the stability it brings. When your work is on the internet and your schooling is very DIY, you have to find routine in whatever you can. So I had a bit of a race. Whatever downloaded first, I’d watch. The horses were Mad Men, Project Runway, Battlestar Gallatica, Damages, and Gossip Girl, all of which I’d never seen. And Gossip Girl won.

I was really hesitant. I had never been a fan of popular teen shows. The few I’d fallen for were so much more than “teen shows” (Buffy, MSCL, Friday Night Lights, Freaks & Geeks). But I was desperate, and had a week off from pretty much everything, so I started watching. And sure enough, I watched the entire season in three days.

I’ll admit some of the storylines are horribly unoriginal, some of the characters are totally cardboard, and the whole thing is a bit whitewashed and shallow. But I’m pretty sure it knows its all of those things (except for maybe the storyline part, the late season “Serena’s past” revelation was almost too much for me), and its that idea that makes the show so fun to watch. Its not-quite-pure camp, and I eagerly await September 1st, when the new season premieres. And below is a bunch of very tiny clips from the first few episodes.
