Atlanta Icon Turns 80

Atlanta Icon Turns 80

V is for Varsity!

On the corner of West Peachtree (natch) and North Avenue, across the way from Gerogia Tech, and mere blocks blocks from Coca-Cola World Headquarters, sits The Varsity.

The questions “What’ll ya have, what’ll ya have, what’ll ya have?” welcome you to the Atlanta landmark that’s been serving hot dogs and frozen oranges and cokes to throngs of patrons for 80 years.

This past Saturday, the icon celebrated its eightieth birthday in style.

Trin had a Number One: 2 chilli cheese dogs, fresh cut fries, and an orange drink. (I had a grilled cheese…extra greasy.)

On the back lot, they served free ice-cream from a yellow truck!

The lot was packed with vintage cars. This came with its own drive-in tray and plastic food.

A “School of Rock” style band composed of some of the best musicians ages 7 to 18 from the metro Atlanta called “The Planet Rock Experience” played vintage 70s rock tunes.

I also heard tell of a NASCAR simulator–am I the only one who finds it ironic that all they do at a NASCAR race is turn left ALL DAY LONG…while leaning so far right?…

…but after all that the cheese: chili dog, grilled and otherwise, I didn’t dare try it.

Sadly, my photos hardly do the place justice.

Check out the audio profile on WABE, Atlanta’s NPR station to get a sense of the flavor.

There’s even a Nipsey Russell shout out:

Nipsy…what’ll ya say?”
