IFC Has Dinner, 'Repo!' Divides Audiences at Fantastic Fest

The 4th annual Fantastic Fest got underway in Austin this weekend. The festival feels bigger than ever, in terms of sponsors, lineup, attendees, and attention. And, that’s exciting. IFC even announced to the trades that six of their upcoming films (both theatrical and VOD) were screening in the festival. Fantastic Fest began on Thursday with the U.S. Premiere of Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and continues on till next Thursday. Here are some pics I took on Friday:

(The crew from Ed Sanchez’s horror film, Seventh Moon, found an old car that was donated by local filmmaker David Modigliani. They beat the hell of out it, and covered it in fake blood, which makes sense if you’ve seen the movie. Disclaimer: Seventh Moon is being sold in the U.S. by Cinetic Media.)

(IFC Films’ Jeff Deutchman, left, sits with Wild Man of Navidad co-director Justin Meeks at an IFC-hosted dinner at Parkside on 6th Street. Navidad screens at Fantastic Fest this week, and was recently bought by IFC for its Festival Direct program.)

(IFC Films’ Ryan Werner, right, with Spout blogger Karina Longworth, at the Friday night dinner.)

(Pieter Van Hees, director of Left Bank, had just flown in from his native Belgium in time for the IFC dinner. Like Meeks, Van Hees has a dual Fantastic Fest and IFC Fest Direct film.)

(One of the most highly anticipated screenings on Friday was Darren Lynn Bousman’s Repo! The Genetic Opera. The film, a futuristic torture-porn musical starring Paul Sorvino and Paris Hilton, has been a curiosity for months. Here’s director Bousman, right, and writer/composer Terrance Zdunich during the film’s Q&A Friday night. I dunno what to say about this movie. Some people loved it, and a lot of us hated it. I’d say there are about 6.5 minutes of brilliance in it, and the rest is a total trainwreck.)
