“I don’t know about you, but what the mainstream media is focusing on is disgusting,” proclaimed Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal, welcoming guests to last week’s Gucci Tribeca Documentar Fund celebration. The party and screening underscored the journalistic role played by many doc filmmakers, each recipient of the grant this year focused on exploring otherwise overlooked stories. Among the highlights of the evening was the moment saluting “Delta Boys” director Andrew Berends (pictured left, with Rory Kennedy), who returned home to NYC just a week earlier, after being detained in Nigeria.

What do you tell a guy whose just been through such an ordeal? “Welcome back” were the first words I could muster before giving him a hug at the cocktail party. Later, as the soiree wound down, Andrew caught wind that a group of us were heading over to John Cameron Mitchell‘s monthly West VIllage dance party, Mattachine, and he enthusiastically jumped in the cab with us. Apparently he’s quite a fan of JCM, so he and his girlfriend made there way through the crowd to watch John DJ alongside “Shortbus” cp-star PJ DeBoy. Unfortunately, JCM slipped out before Andrew got a moment with him. Next time…
