This gentle tale brings rich and poor together in a shared humanity. Venkatesh, a working class teenager, admires a beautiful swimming pool and befriends the owner, who imagines a better future for him. In this fiction feature, director Chris Smith uses his documenter’s eye to immerse us in class conscious India.
I interviewed Smith in the Film Forum offices above the theater for a feature on the “Pool.”
He was surprised when I told him that I saw his first film, “American Job,” at Sundance in 1996, because that made me one of a handful who had seen the film on the big screen (before the print was restored for his recent MoMA retrospective.)
