On critics. On women.

On critics. On women.

Yesterday the NYFF held a panel discussion on the state of film criticism. When Film Comment editor Gavin Smith introduced O magazine critic Jessica Winter, he made a disparaging comment about Oprah’s audience. Come on, Gavin….

Oprah is one of the most influential women in the media, with an audience of mostly… women.

Women were outnumbered on the panel, as we invariably are in film industry discussions. With eight on stage, Winter and blogger/engineer-by-profession Pascual Espiritu actually created an unusually high female ratio.

According to this story in AlterNet, (in which my blog gets a mention), “The lack of female voices in film criticism is a manifestation of an industry that favors male-oriented movies and audiences.”

“…an industry that favors male-oriented…audiences”

This does not bode well for fans of Oprah.

Look, if you posit “Film Criticism in Crisis?” you have to examine the entire supply chain, where (more than) half of your potential audience is underrepresented.
