Happy Halloween with ‘The Worst Witch’

Happy Halloween with 'The Worst Witch'

Okay, Halloween is almost here. This night means a lot of different things, to different people. To me, it all goes back to the movies. I’ve seen many movies I’d recommend as perfect Halloween viewing. The Worst Witch, however, is not on that list. The Worst Witch, starring Fairuza Balk in the titular role, is a 1980s “golden oldie” that was a cable-TV staple. I stumbled upon this clip, featuring Tim Curry in the film, and it is not only 80s-rrific but also Halloween to the max. Pay attention to the brilliant lyrics, delivered in a weird Bowie/Jagger hybrid:

“Anything can happen on Halloween/ Your toenails grow wrong and your hair turns green/ Your teacher could become a sardine/ Your dentist could turn into a queen/ Has anyone seen my tambourine?/ I may starting playing ‘Begin the Beguine.'”

Really? A Cole Porter reference factors into a horrible song like this?

Happy Halloween and immeasurable thanks to Scott Mendelson’s Film Threat blog for the heads up.
