iW NEWS | MEIFF Announces Black Pearl Awards

The Black Pearl Awards ceremony, as part of the second annual Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF), were presented last night at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. US$1 million worth of prizes were the culmination of the ten day fest, where 76 feature films and 34 short films screened and competed. Steve Jacobs‘ “Disgrace” won the Black Pearl for Best Narrative Film, Gonzalo Arijon‘s “Stranded” won for Best Documentary, Elisabeth Chai Vasarhelyi‘s “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love” won a special jury prize, Ilham Shaheen and Luca Zingaretti won best actress and actor for “ Fawzia: A Special Blend” and “Wild Blood,” respectively, and the the Black Pearl Audience Choice Award went to Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit‘s “Saving Luna.” The festival closed with the Middle East premiere of Ridley Scott‘s “Body of Lies.” [Peter Knegt]
