SNL Pulls Off A Great Episode Amid Massive Attention

I thought this weekend’s Saturday Night Live was pretty good, and echoed that sentiment to all of the cast members I ran into during the after-party at Wildwood. Cameo players Sarah Palin, Alec Baldwin, and Mark Wahlberg were nowhere to be seen at the party, but show creator Lorne Michaels and all the cast regulars (with host Josh Brolin and wife Diane Lane) were celebrating an episode that was rich with anticipation and massive ratings. For the most part, they delivered better than any other episode this season.

The Palin opening wasn’t all that wonderful, but the show was wrapped by some strong sketch work, including:

Meanwhile, there is something kinda charming about this rap performance/parody about Sarah Palin. And, no, it’s not Palin’s inclusion. If anything, I think her involvement was nothing but awkward:

That’s when the show is at its best: taking a cultural moment that might be a dud, and striving to make it funny.
