Where Have You Gone, ‘Entourage?’

Where Have You Gone, 'Entourage?'

There used to be no bigger fan of Entourage, than me. I was even quoted in Newsweek over three years ago, about why the show is so great. Lately, however, the show stinks. Having just seen the seventh episode of the new season, I’m hungry for something good. So far, I’d say there’s only been one solid episode all season. The rest is just hyper-indulgent bromance and insider Hollywood speak. The show was once universal, and now it’s too consumed in serving up the same tired storylines. Every episode is virtually the same now: Vince can’t catch a break, Eric is trying to save the day, Turtle wants to get laid, Johnny Drama wants to be appreciated, and Ari is in a foul mood. Some “unqiue” conflict arises in each episode, and then by the end, the boys come out of it okay.

It’s not that the show’s once beloved premise and characters have gotten stale. I blame the writing and the development, which have just gotten lazy. By making Vince the underdog, they took the gang out of their comfort zone (seemingly to spark a rebirth in the show) and yet forgot to use that for inventive storylines. Vince and the guys are just stumbling in and out of mediocre fortune. There seems to be no risk involved, and only arbitrary conflict. Basically, we’re seven episodes into the new season, and no one is doing anything. Not a thing. Vince wants a job, Vince can’t get a job. Eric is trying to further his career, Eric is having trouble furthering his career. Turtle is wearing a baseball cap, Turtle is not wearing a baseball cap. Things need to get exciting, fast, or the entourage is getting smaller soon.
