AWARDS WATCH ’08 | “Australia,” “Milk,” “Slumdog” Lead Satellite Nods

AWARDS WATCH '08 | "Australia," "Milk," "Slumdog" Lead Satellite Nods

Baz Luhrmann‘s “Australia” led the 13th Annual Satellite Award nominations, which were announced today by the International Press Academy. However, “Australia”‘s nine nominations were mainly in the artistic and technical categories. It failed to make the cut for the Motion Picture, Drama category, where the nominees were “Frost/Nixon,” “Frozen River,” “Milk,” “The Reader,” “Revolutionary Road” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” “Milk” and “Slumdog” both tallied six nominations apiece, the second highest total of any film.

The unpredictable and occasionally downright wacky awards had many surprise inclusions. Catherine Deneuve will compete for comedy or music actress for “A Christmas Tale” alongside Lisa Kudrow for “Kabluey” and Debra Messing for “Nothing Like The Holidays.” Penelope Cruz was nominated for supporting actress for “Elegy” instead of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” despite arguably being the lead in the former, and having considerably more buzz for the latter. Supporting actor also had a a surprising addition in Rade Sherbedgia for his work in “Fugitive Pieces.”

Nominations in the best documentary category included somewhat expected films like “Man on Wire,” “Encounters and the End of the World,” “Pray The Devil Back To Hell,” “Religulous” and “Waltz With Bashir,” but also, surprisingly, Robbie Cavolina and Ian McCrudden‘s doc “Anita O’Day – The Life of a Jazz Singer.”

Notable snubs included David Fincher‘s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which did receive nominations for original screenplay (even though it is clearly an adaptation, as is fellow nominee “Elegy“) and a few technical awards, but was not nominated for picture or acting. “Che,” “Gran Torino” and “Defiance” were snubbed altogether, while Kate Winslet was nominated for best actress but for “The Reader” and not “Revolutionary Road.”

Last year, only one of the Satellites best picture, drama nominees – “No Country For Old Men” – went on to gain a best picture Academy Award nomination. The other films included “The Lookout,” “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead,” “Away From Her,” “Eastern Promises” and “3:10 To Yuma.” This year, I would suspect that there should be an increase in carry-over in that category.
