Mickey Rourke had his easy, paved road to an Oscar nomination right in front of him. His performance in The Wrestler (out next month) is one of the year’s best, and certainly the comeback role of 2008. I never thought for a moment Rourke would win the Best Actor Oscar (I think it will be Brad Pitt, but more on that some other day), because I don’t think the Academy will ever want to give him the trophy. And now, he does this:
Hollywood gossips are all atwitter over Mickey Rourke’s latest politically incorrect gaffe this week. Rourke, whose movie The Wrestler is due December 17, was out for a quiet evening at the Hyde Club in L.A. when a trailing journalist dared to mention rumors romantically linking him to Wrestler costar Evan Rachel Wood, who recently split from Marilyn Manson.
Perhaps it was the presence of a blond date on his arm that made Rourke respond, “Does it look like I’m dating Evan Rachel Wood? She’s a good friend, that’s it. Tell that faggot who wrote all that shit in the paper I’d like to break his fucking legs.”
Prop 8 may have passed in California, but you can bet that a healthy portion of Academy voters in the state, wouldn’t be thrilled with Rourke’s choice of words.
