Spout’s Karina Longworth offers some thoughtful insight (and anger) regarding not only Angelina Jolie‘s overrated Changeling performance, but Jolie’s career in general.
Hopefully people start listening to these criticisms, because I keep imagining how possible it might be for Jolie to make the Oscar shortlist (Dave Karger seems to think so) despite 100 women I’d argue are more qualified (Vanessa Hudgens in High School Musical 3?). I know they’re desperate for a Pitt-Jolie nomination duo to boost ratings, but just nominate him and she’ll still show up. You’ve already got a possible Leo-Kate duo, a likely winner in Heath Ledger that will undoubtedly bring a slew of interest and viewers, and an actual box office hit that’s looking more in the running everyday. Give her slot to unbelievably deserving people like Sally Hawkins or Kristin Scott Thomas or Melissa Leo or Michelle Williams.
Changeling doesn’t deserve anything beyond maybe a costume nod (I posted thoughts on the film back in May). Thankfully it seems to be underperforming at the box office, so maybe it’ll just go away quietly, unlike Jolie’s performance in the film.
