iW NEWS | "Stranger Than Fiction" Season Closes Tonight

New York City’s popular “Stranger Than Fiction” doc series will close out its Fall program tonight with Kevin Rafferty and Frank Keraudren‘s 1999 film “The Last Cigarette.” Programmed by Thom Powers, the program will resume with three special screenings in December. Powers recently wrote an essay on the program’s website, “Wanted: Documentary Critics.” Powers writes: “Documentary filmmakers are increasing their output, but publications are decreasing staff and space for reviews. Bloggers fill some of the void. But the pressure on blogs to be quick and current leaves a gap for more thoughtful analysis. For any critic who wants to delve into documentary, an exciting job awaits. But the job is not likely to be offered. It has to be seized.” Check out the entire essay here. [Peter Knegt]
