Not Bad, Texas

Not Bad, Texas

Years ago, I resigned my self to the fact that Texas was an overwhelmingly red state. Which is fine, whatever, I have lots of family and friends that have always and will always vote Republican. My old hometown of Austin, and its Travis County, typically lean on the blue side of things. And that was a source of personal pride. For this latest Presidential Election, though, Texas came back to its Democratic past (LBJ, Ann Richards, etc.) in a big way. According to this New York Times map, while McCain narrowly won the state, Obama won Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. In other words, he won the state’s four major cities. Plus, he also won the region of Texas where I spent my childhood: the Rio Grande Valley along the Mexico border. Not bad, Texas, job well done.
